Xan

Xan came to see me today. He brought lunch. It was OK, I mean he's one of my best friends and all, but I got a bit of a lecture.

Let me tell you a little about Xan. Not only is he one of my best friends, but he was David's boyfriend. They loved each other dearly, even though David used to tease Xan mercilessly and tell him he was going to date girls in heaven.

Xan really hasn't been the same since David died. He used to be so much fun and lately he has been very sobor and serious when he sees me.

"Em, you need to cut the crap and stop telling people that you meet everything about yourself."

"OK, Xan, but I'm lonely. I'm bored and lonely, which is a bad combination."

"That's ridiculous Em. You have me. You have your family."

I snorted and took a bite of my chicken salad sandwich.

"Listen, I've been meaning to ask you, where is David's journal?"

"Journal?"

"Your mom said he had a journal and she gave it to you."

I chewed my sandwich thoughtfully and shook my head. "I think she thought this was a journal." I reached over and picked up David's leather-bound address book and handed it to Xan.

Xan flipped through it for a few minutes, frowning. "Are you sure?"

I shrugged. "That's the only thing I know about."

"OK. Just remember Em, you need to stop telling everyone everything."

"I don't know what you're talking about Xan. I haven't told anybody anything. Besides, I have no secrets."

Xan looked at me carefully and nodded. He offered me some of his potato chips. "Just be careful."
